The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute successfully registered Kalijira rice as a Geographical Indication (GI) product on June 17, 2021. Kalijira rice is renowned for its small size, distinctive fragrance, and black husk, which turns into white grains upon peeling. Originating from the Mymensingh region along the Brahmaputra River, Kalijira rice has gained popularity nationwide due to its exceptional taste and quality. Cultivation typically occurs during the months of Shravan to Bhadra (August to mid-September), with harvesting taking place at the end of Agrahayan (between December 10th and 15th), coinciding with the Ropa Aman season. Kalijira rice is commonly used in various dishes such as rice, polao, pies, and phirni, reflecting its versatile culinary applications.
