The Netrokona district administration office applied for Geographical Indication (GI) recognition of a natural resource in 2017, which was approved in 2021. This resource is located in Durgapur, now an upazila of Netrakona, where high-quality clay, known as china clay, is found along the banks of the Sameswari River. The clay is utilized in various industries, including ceramics, tiles, and glass, owing to its excellent quality. Chemical analysis reveals varying compositions of silicon oxide, aluminum oxide, iron oxide, titanium oxide, and calcium oxide in the white clay from Bijoypur, with soil characteristics ranging from black, gray, to red soils that exhibit different properties when dry or wet. Since the 1960s, soil extraction efforts have been ongoing, with multiple wells dug and significant quantities of clay excavated and stockpiled for commercial use.
