The Bangladesh Sericulture Development Board of Rajshahi District successfully registered 'Rajshahi Silk' as a Geographical Indication (GI) product on June 17, 2021. Rajshahi silk, made from mulberry silk fibers, is known for its comfort, with 11% water content making it suitable for wear in all seasons. The silk production process involves silkworms feeding on mulberry leaves, forming silk balls from their saliva, and extracting raw silk through reeling machines. This raw silk undergoes various processing methods before being woven into Rajshahi silk fabric, known for its brightness, shine, softness, and comfort. With historical roots dating back to at least 1759, Rajshahi silk was once exported globally from the Boalia port of Rajshahi, and recent efforts have revived its export potential.
