The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute sought Geographical Indication (GI) registration for a particular rice variety on February 6, 2017, and it was approved on June 17, 2021. This rice variety is known for its narrow, fragrant, and curved grains, resembling a knife. While it is cultivated across Bangladesh, its primary cultivation areas are Dinajpur, Mymensingh, Tangail, Magura, and Sylhet districts, with Dinajpur being its origin. Studies indicate that Kataribhog rice is predominantly cultivated in Chiribandar Upazila of Dinajpur district, owing to its favorable cultivation environment. Typically grown as a seasonal crop of Ropa Aman, Kataribhog rice requires planting during the months of Shravan to Bhadra (August to mid-September) and is harvested between December 10th and 15th. Additionally, this rice variety is utilized in various delicious dishes such as polao, biryani, jorda, payesh, and phirni.
