Jamdani, a renowned textile art form, has a rich history in Bangladesh, dating back to ancient times when muslin cloth was woven from carpus cotton. UNESCO recognized traditional Jamdani and its weaving industry as the 'Intangible Cultural Heritage of Bangladesh' in 2013. Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Jamdani by seeking its registration as a Geographical Indication (GI) product in 2015, which was granted in 2016. The Jamdani saree, characterized by intricate hand-woven designs, is predominantly crafted in Narayanganj and Sonargaon of Dhaka, with the Shitalakshya River area providing an ideal climate for weaving. Despite facing challenges such as the decline of cottage industries during the Industrial Revolution, efforts like the establishment of Jamdani Palli and Jamdani Nagar underscore ongoing initiatives to sustain and celebrate this cultural heritage.
