The Department of Fisheries of Bangladesh obtained Geographical Indication (GI) recognition for Bagda shrimp in April 2022, marking its tenth GI product. Known colloquially as Black Tiger Shrimp, Bagda shrimp, scientifically named Penaeus monodon, is a significant source of revenue, often referred to as "White Gold" due to its substantial contribution to foreign exchange earnings. Bangladesh ranks among the top ten producers of this shrimp species globally, with extensive cultivation in coastal and marine waters. Shrimp farming has undergone significant evolution since traditional practices in the 1950s, with advancements including the establishment of hatcheries and expansion of farming areas. The Department of Fisheries has played a pivotal role in promoting shrimp farming through initiatives such as farmer training programs and technological advancements, leading to substantial increases in production volumes over the years.
