The Bangladesh Handloom Board (BHB) successfully obtained a Geographical Indication (GI) certificate for muslin fabric on June 17, 2021, following an application made on January 2, 2018. Muslin, a 100% cotton fabric, is renowned for its hand-spun, uneven texture, making it exceptionally smooth, thin, transparent, and lightweight, providing unparalleled comfort when worn. Originating from areas around Dhaka district, including Sonargaon, Titabadi, and Dhamrai, muslin is historically associated with fine craftsmanship dating back thousands of years. Dhakai muslin weaving involves three stages: production and collection of corpus, spinning, and weaving of the cloth, with its name derived from Mosul, an ancient trading center in Iraq. Despite facing decline during British rule, recent initiatives have revived muslin production, showcasing its rich history, diverse varieties, and versatile applications in garments such as sarees, veils, scarves, and turbans.
