The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute obtained Geographical Indication (GI) recognition for the Khirsapati mango, an egg-shaped medium-sized fruit, on January 27, 2019, following an application made on February 2, 2017. Known for its fiberless kernel, juicy texture, attractive aroma, and notably sweet taste (with an average sweetness of 23%), the Khirsapati mango boasts a thin seed, allowing for a high edible portion of the fruit, averaging at 67.2%. Considered the most advanced variety among all mango types in Bangladesh, the Khirsapati mango, also known as Himsagar, is commercially cultivated in mid-season, ripening from the third week of the Jaishtha month (beginning of June). Predominantly cultivated in five upazilas of Chapainawabganj, particularly Shibganj, Bholarhat, and Gomstapur upazilas, historical records indicate mango orchards in Shibganj dating back two hundred years, featuring the cultivation of Khirsapati mangoes.
