The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) applied for the registration of Shataranji as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, a traditional handicraft originating from the Rangpur region, on July 11, 2019, with acceptance granted on June 17, 2021. The craft's development traces back to Nisbetganj village, formerly known as Pirpur, where weavers produced colorful carpets and cloths dating back to the 13th century. Named after British citizen Mr. Nisbet, who promoted the industry during his tenure as the Collector of Rangpur district in the 1830s, Nisbetganj became synonymous with Shataranji production. Shataranji gained popularity during British rule and was exported to various countries, becoming a symbol of aristocracy and craftsmanship. Despite initial challenges, initiatives by organizations like BSCIC and local NGOs have revitalized Shataranji production, leading to its export to over 36 countries and contributing significantly to Bangladesh's handicraft export industry.
